  69.  So...before you install, look at the date on the files inside of the
  70.  ZIPed file.  If the date is more than a week old, you may want to call
  71.  and get the latest version.  We release minor versions about once a week

  105.  If you have a registered version of FaxMail for Windows you may *NOT*
  106.  share the registered version with others.

  108.  FaxMail for Windows is shareware.  This means you have a chance to
  109.  test the performance FaxMail for Windows before committing yourself
  110.  to buying it.  You have a one month legal trial.  After one month you
  111.  must pay for FaxMail for Windows or discontinue its use.

  113.  Only the unregistered version of FaxMail for Windows may be distributed
  114.  freely, and no fee may be charged for it except a nominal copying fee.

  119. IMPORTANT INFORMATION:
  120.  If you are currently using another Fax-Program, you will have to disable
  121.  or remove it before using FaxMail for Windows as two Fax-Programs can
  122.  not share the same Fax/Modem or run concurrently.  To disable it may be
  123.  as easy as not loading it or you may have to remove one or more lines
  124.  from your AUTOEXEC.BAT, CONFIG.SYS, WIN.INI or SYSTEM.INI.  Typing rem
  125.  ahead of a line in your AUTOEXEC.BAT or CONFIG.SYS will disable it.

  141.  If your old Fax-Program loads from the Windows-StartUp-Group as you enter

  145.  if you load the wrong Fax/Modem-Driver the worst that can be expected
  146.  to happen is that the Fax/Modem-Driver might not load or the program might
  147.  hang or fail to operate, and perhaps your modem might be left in Fax mode
  148.  and require manual resetting(turn it off and back on).  Since information
  149.  about models that don't work with this program will aid in correcting
  150.  unsuspected problems, we would appreciate any information you can give

  163. FAX/MODEM INSTALLATION:
  164. (IMPORTANT: Read but don't do this unless you are installing or
  165. reinstalling a Fax/Modem)

  167. Definitions:
  168. COM, Communications-Port (1 - 4).
  169. IRQ, Interrupt-ReQuest (0 - 15).
  170. External Fax/Modem, is placed *ON* a COM-Port!
  171. Internal Fax/Modem, *REPLACES* a COM-Port!
  172.  
  173. A majority of the people I give tech-support to have a hardware conflict
  174. due to improper Internal Fax/Modem installation!
  175.  
  176. NOTE: An External Fax/Modem is placed *ON* a COM-Port!
  177.  
  178. NOTE: An Internal Fax/Modem *REPLACES* a COM-Port!
  179.  
  180. If you are having problems with a Modem, Read the above line until
  181. you comprehend and understand them.
  182.  
  183. External Fax/Modem:
  184. Plug one end of the COM cable into your Fax/Modem and the other end into a
  185. vacant COM-Port.  You will have to know what COM-Port and what IRQ you
  186. plugged into so you can let the software know during software installation.
  187.  
  188. Internal Fax/Modem:
  189. When installing an Internal Fax/Modem, be sure you disable the COM-Port
  190. (located on your IO-Board) you are going to replace.  Then; before
  191. installing the Internal Fax/Modem, test, with opening screen of
  192. COMTEST1.COM (comes with FaxMail for Windows), to be sure the COM-Port
  193. really is disabled, and then, AND ONLY THEN, are you ready to install the
  194. "Internal Fax/Modem".  Not doing this properly is the overwhelming major
  195. reason for Modem and other computer problems that maybe to the average
  196. person seem to have no relationship to their Modem, but it does!  If you
  197. are installing on COM2-IRQ3, the COMTEST1.COM opening screen should look
  198. like this BEFORE you install the Fax/Modem.

  200. COM1-IRQ4: UART (16450 Chip) or Equivalent detected.
  201. COM2-IRQ*: No UART/COM/Modem/Serial Port detected.
  202. COM3-IRQ*: No UART/COM/Modem/Serial Port detected.
  203. COM4-IRQ*: No UART/COM/Modem/Serial Port detected.

  205. Then you are ready to set the jumpers on your Internal Fax/Modem to
  206. COM2-IRQ3 and insert it into a vacant slot; thus replacing COM2.
  207.  
  208. You can use DEBUG.EXE to help install Modems, but it is not as actuate as
  209. COMTEST1.COM.
  210.  
  211. If you are reinstalling a Fax/Modem on a different COM-IRQ, keep in mind
  212. that you may have to reinstall or run setup on all the software that is
  213. presently using the Fax/Modem.

  218. If COM1-IRQ4 and COM2-IRQ3 are in ues, I would suggest one of the
  219. following configurations:
  220.  COM3-IRQ5,

  239. FaxMail for Windows will supports COM1 through COM4 on IRQ0 through IRQ15.
  240. But...Before these addresses can be used, your "COM-Port/Fax/Modem" must
  241. first support the configuration and second you must properly configure said
  242. device.

  244. Never skip a COM-Port as the system will go into "conflict-convulsion"
  245. from time to time.  To find a vacant IRQ, run something like SYSONFO.EXE,
  246. etc.  Here is some information on IRQs in the IBM-Compatible.  They are:
  247. IRQ0 - IRQ15.  N/A means not normally available for your Fax/Modem.

  286. As you can see, if IRQ4 is used by COM1, you have to find another IRQ for
  287. COM3.  If you have a COM1-IRQ4 and you use COM3 you will need to use one
  288. of the alternative IRQ.  The same goes if you are going to use COM4 and
  289. you have a COM2-IRQ3.

  292.  It is best to use COM1-IRQ4 or COM2-IRQ3 for Fax/Modems, as they were
  293.  originally and specifically set aside for communications.  Experience
  294.  has shown me that some Fax/Modems do not preform as well on COM3 and COM4
  295.  using IRQ2, IRQ7 or IRQ5.

  298.  By the way, the problem with this and most system tests, such as
  299.  MSD.EXE, is that they tell you what is suppose to be or what is normally
  300.  on an IRQ.  For instances, when I ran this test, as you can see, it says
  301.  that "LPT1" is on IRQ7.  The fact is I have a Rockwell class 1,2
  302.  Fax/Modem on COM3-IRQ7.  When I ran COMTEST1.COM and COMTEST2.COM I got
  303.  the following results:

  346. BEFORE SOFTWARE INSTALLATION:
  347. If, while installing FaxMail for Windows you find that your Fax/Modem is not
  348. listed, it is possible that one of the selections will work.  For instance,
  349. DoveFax Class 1 and Practical Peripherals Class 1 works with many other
  350. class 1 Fax/Modems.  The {"Universal, Rockwell, Class 2"} will work with
  351. nearly all of the Fax/Modems derived from the "Rockwell Class 2 Accelerator
  352. Kit".  Generic Class 2, Zoom Class 2, ZyXEL Class 2, and Dallas Class 2
  353. Fax/Modem-Drivers are all Class 2 Fax/Modem-Drivers.  There are a lot of
  354. "Class 2" variations, so, if your "Class 2" board does not work with one,
  355. it may work with another.  The
  356.   "Universal, Hayes, Rockwell, Class 1",
  357.   "Universal, Rockwell, Class 1",  and the
  358.   "Universal, Rockwell, Class 2"
  359. Fax/Modem-Drivers are designed to do the job if all else fails.  It should
  360. not always be the first choice because even though it is more versatile, it
  361. may not perform as well as the one recommended by us.  Depending on your
  362. computer, another Fax/Modem-Driver may work better than our recommended one
  363. though.  Sometimes, depending on your computer, COM-Port (FIFO(16550) or
  364. not), the
  365.   "Universal, Hayes, Rockwell, Class 1",
  366.   "Universal, Rockwell, Class 1",
  367.          - or -
  368.   "Universal, Rockwell, Class 2"
  369. may outperform the recommended Fax/Modem-Driver.  By The Way, these 2
  370. Fax/Modem-Drivers support FIFO operation.

  372. If your Fax/Modem is not listed, look for an alternate Fax/Modem-Driver.
  373. An Internal Fax/Modem-Driver can be used to drive an External Fax/Modem,
  374. and an External Fax/Modem-Driver can be used to drive an Internal
  375. Fax/Modem.  The name is not important.  For instance, the AT&T class 1
  376. will work on many other class 1 Fax/Modems.  Choosing the wrong
  377. Fax/Modem-Driver will not harm Anything.

  380.  installation and *WILL NOT* work properly if simply copied into your
  381.  working directory.  You *MUST* use the INSTALL.EXE or configuration
  382.  utilities to add or change anything.

  466. After installation, you will have several icons in the FaxMail for Windows
  467. Group and one in your StartUp Group.  Please note these icons; "Read Me"
  468. (README.TXT), "Q and A" (Q_A.TXT), "FaxMail Tutor" (TUTOR31.WRI), and
  469. "FaxMail Help".  These should be read before using FaxMail for Windows.
  470. There is also "Contact-Sensitive Help" buttons, throughout FaxMail for
  471. Windows, for your convenience,.

  473. Everything is explained thoroughly in the FaxMail for Windows help system,
  474. which may be called upon from anywhere in FaxMail for Windows.

  476. If you want to use FaxMail for Windows from within any Windows Application
  477. and/or take advantage of *ALL* the power FaxMail for Windows has, load the
  478. "Control" program that you will find in the FaxMail for Windows Group before
  479. loading any other Windows Applications.

  481. After the Control program is loaded, click on the System button (the small
  482. square button at the top left corner of all windows) and choose SetUp and
  483. configure things *YOUR WAY*.  I suggest that if you are not sure of
  484. something, leave the defaults set as it came to you.  Make a printout of the
  485. defaults in case you change something you do not understand yet.

  488.   If the Fax/Modem-Driver does not load at when you turn on your computer
  489.   it could be because FaxMail for Windows installs its Fax/Modem-Driver
  490.   at the top of the AUTOEXEC.BAT file, and other drivers can cancel
  491.   it out.  If this happens to you, move the Fax/Modem-Driver command:
  492. LH C:\FAXMAIL\FM_ROCK2.COM
  493.   to a spot just before the Windows load command.

  497. HELPFUL HINTS:
  498.                         "Silent Answer"
  499. Silent Answer requires the support and cooperation of the remote sending
  500. Fax/Modem/Machine with your receiving Fax/Modem.  If the sending
  501. Fax/Modem/Machine does not support "Silent Answer" by sending the "CNG"
  502. tone, you will lose that Fax!  Please read *all* of this area before using
  503. "Silent Answer".  If you still want "Silent Answer", here is what it does
  504. and how to implement it.
  505.  
  506.  Silent answer let one telephone line be used for two purposes;
  507.  receiving FAXes with the Fax/Modem, and receiving voice calls with
  508.  an answering machine or telephone.  When set to this mode, the
  509.  Fax/Modem lets your answering machine answer all incoming calls.
  510.  If it detects Fax "CNG" tones, it routes the call to FaxMail for
  511.  Windows.  Otherwise, it just sits silently on the phone line while
  512.  you or your answering machine takes the call.
  513.  
  514.  When the phone rings and after the second ring the Fax/Modem will
  515.  start monitoring the telephone line.  If it detects a Fax tone, it
  516.  will receive the Fax.  If it does not detects a fax tone, it will do
  517.  nothing.
  518.  
  519. Silent Answer hardware installation
  520.  When installing the Fax/Modem, DO NOT plug the answering machine into
  521.  the telephone jack on the back of the Fax/Modem.  Instead, do one of
  522.  the following:
  523.  
  524. a. Plug the answering machine and Fax/Modem into different wall jack
  525.    (i.e. jacks in different rooms).
  526.  
  527. b. Plug the answering machine into a wall jack and the Fax/Modem into
  528.    the answering machine.
  529.  
  530.  
  531. c. If your answering machine has some kind of phone-jack switching;
  532.    use this method. You must locate the two devices on separate
  533.    extensions to make silent answer work correctly.  This means you
  534.    can not plug the answering machine into the Fax/Modem or vise
  535.    versa.  You can split a single extension with a duplex jack
  536.    adapter.  Radio Shack commonly carries these, part number 279-357
  537.    for $4.49.
  538.  
  539.  Also, if you have an older answering machine that does NOT
  540.  automatically turn itself off when it detects that a person or the
  541.  Fax/Modem has answered the call, you need a $7.95 adapter from
  542.  Radio Shack, part#43-107.  This adapter disconnects the answering
  543.  machine from the phone line when the call is answered.  It goes
  544.  between the answering machine and the wall jack.
  545.  
  546. Note:
  547.  The device that is picking up the line initially, must answer
  548.  after, and not before, the second ring.  This means you should
  549.  set it to 3 for best results.  If no other device picks up the
  550.  line by the time the number of rings that FaxMail for Windows
  551.  is set to is reached, FaxMail for Windows will answer it and
  552.  process a Fax.

  556. To activate Silent Answer
  557.  Load the FaxMail for Windows 'Control' program and click on the
  558.  <System> Button, <Setup> Button and on the Silent Answer <Check>
  559.  Button.  Set the number of rings until we answer to four and set
  560.  your answering-machine to three rings.  If the Silent Answer
  561.  <Check> Button is inactive and gray, your Fax/Modem does not
  562.  support Silent Answer.

  565.            How to enable auto-load (registered version only)
  566.  
  567. When you boot-up, you have a choice as to whether you want to load the
  568. FaxMail for Windows Fax/Modem-Driver or not.  If you plan to always load the
  569. FaxMail for Windows Fax/Modem-Driver, you can place y or Y behind the
  570. Fax/Modem-Driver.  Here are two examples:

  586. There is an ICON, FAX vs BBS, in the FaxMail for Windows Group for the
  587. purpose of allowing you to control the Fax/Modem mode.

  591.  -Load your BBS-Software and log-onto the BBS.

  617. Use FAX-MODE.COM to Enable the Fax/Modem-Driver again after you log-off the
  618. BBS.  Here is an example of a Batch(.BAT) File that will do it all for you.
  619. Lets say that you are using a BBS program called Telemate, and it's name is
  620. TM.EXE.  The following Batch File will Disable the "Fax/Modem-Driver" load
  621. "Telemate" and when you exit the BBS program (Telemate) it will "Enable"
  622. the Fax/Modem-Driver so you can resume FAXing.  At the DOS Prompt:
